Introduction
The version referred to here is 1.9.10.
This piece of freeware is used for video editing. Input video files must be
either in AVI or MPEG1 (read not write - in other words you can input an MPEG1
file but when you save it it must be as an AVI) format.
Why Use It?
- Its free!
- It does NOT need installed - it can even be run off a data stick!
- It has lots of filters pre-installed and others you can get from websites. Filters include those that: blur, anti shake, sharpen, smooth, flip, resize rotate, brightness/contrast,
levels, deinterlace (This is removing the extra rows from TV video that produces lines on computer video).
- It renders files very quickly.
- It has the ability to show all the codecs installed on your computer and is excellent for compressing videos.
- It is easy to extract the sound from a video and save it separately.
- Each frame in a video can be saved as a JPEG photo.
- It can deal with cropping - removing the black bands at the top and bottom of videos. These often have titles and logos.
- It can fix lagging - when the audio lags behind (or is in front) of the video.
- It has the normal copying, cutting pasting etc of video. The advantage of VirtualDub is that this can be processed very easily by the user a frame at a time.
- Logos can be added (along with Aegisub).
- Fun videos such as the one on the left can be made easily.
- Can check videos for errors.
It cannot do transitions and does not use storyboards. In my opinion, VirtualDub compliments Moviemaker or Pinnacle.
