Hands and Thumb Gestures

The hand has 27 bones and it has the most nerve connections. Using hand gestures when talking is good as the audience will retain up to a third more of what has been said.

Elbow Touching

Touching the elbow can give you up to 3 times the chance of getting what you want. There are three reasons for this:

1. The elbow is considered a public space.
2. Touching a stranger is thought not to be acceptable so you are creating an image.
3. You are creating a momentary bond – touching for more than 3 seconds gives a negative response.

1. Hand / Palm Rubbing

This is a sign of positive expectation.

2. Thumb and Finger Rub

This indicates a money connection. Professional sellers should not use it as it puts off buyers.

3. Hands Clenched Together

This can illustrate a restrained, anxious or negative attitude. It can signal a level of frustration ie the person is holding back a negative or anxious attitude. The height to which the clench is held indicates the degree of frustration.

4. The Steeple

This is a gesture that does not have to be interpreted as part of a cluster. It shows a self confident attitude. Bosses often use this when ordering around their subordinates. It can be seen as being smug and arrogant! The raised steeple is used when the steepler is giving his opinion. The lowered steeple is used when the steepler is listening.
