Pink Telephone

7-38-55 Rule

A study by the Psychologist Albert Mehrabin found that the impact of a message came from 7% words, 38% vocal and tone and 55% non verbal. The problem is that what we say often does not match with our body language. This is called incongruence and the body does not know how to lie. Your thoughts and emotions are subconsciously shown by the positions and stances adopted by the body. Women are particularly good at reading body language – especially those who have had children. They have around 15 areas of the brain that deal with BL interpretation, whereas men have about 5! Psychics, tarot readers and astrologists are often very good at reading non verbal language – even if they are being genuine and don’t realise it!

The Power of Body Language

It has been found that people who negotiate by phone – the person with the better argument will win. This is different to face to face discussions where the person with the better 55% non verbal often are more effective.

Reading Body Language

It is important to look for gestures in clusters. Experts in this area talk about a single gesture being like a word and a collection of words (gestures) being like a sentence. This illustrates the point that a word on its own can have a totally different meaning as compared to a word in a sentence where there will be a context.
